I was wading in clear pools
when the storm created giant waves
carrying everyone along with it
rising high above the clouds
and then barreling towards shore
I looked frantically for you
your straw hair stuck somewhere
where the sea walls chased cars
like cops on a highway
frothing at the seams
I didn't notice at first
when the wind picked up but
I saw women posting signs on doors
warning about both gusts and guts
only then I turned to face the sea
I wanted to follow everyone
but I couldn't see you yet on the quilted
bed of waves in deep azure fabric
so my feet stuck in the mud now
forming at the bottom of the pools
Somewhere between the crowds and mist
you suddenly appeared carrying
something I couldn't recognize
and we started to run away
but not fast enough
The car door slammed but you were calm
though my voice a seashell
and panic blanketed the air, choking me
we moved slowly, headed on vacation
not looking backwards
